Impact and Hit Effects

Category: DNF
by Kristian Joensen, on Fri Feb 13 2009, 06:11PM

George Broussard has a new quote up on his Twitter:

Working on hud impact and hit effects today. Been in a while but need polish and attention. These things really contribute to the "feel".

(Source)

Seems like their current focus is pretty centered on the intereface and menus.

Update:

George has since answered a question about the above Twitter update.

Question:

shawnomatic77:
@georgeb3dr I'm a UI guy in the industry and I'm curious, are you guys using some kind of middleware like Scaleform or something custom?

Answer:

GB:
@shawnomatic77 Just basic custom stuff. Being a shooter you don't tend to need EA sports/racing style interfaces.

Update 2:

Yet another update:

GB:
Putting in some new main menu sound effects. Beefy sounding.

Thanks to Adam Cracow of the 3D Realms forums for the heads up.

DNF Task Database

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Wed Feb 11 2009, 11:46PM

Here's how I interpreted the image below:

- Melee attacks may be possible
- The AI may be able to throw pipebombs
- You can use a quick-key to throw grenades and pipebombs
- For the record, Asstrooper = Assault Trooper
- The HUD may fade out when it's not needed
- Allammo is a cheat code that gives you all inventory items
- Steroids and Holoduke are in the game
- Besides classic saving, the game may work with automatic checkpoints
- The health system may work like the ego system seen in DN: Manhattan Project
- Freeze balls (from the freezer gun?) may be able to bounce off of Octabrains' brainblast projectiles
- Octabrain blasts may detonate pipebombs, but this may be changed.
- There are various vehicles in the game.
- There may be at least 16 levels OR maps in the game

From George's Twitter:

It confirms quite a few things that may be in the game.  Interesting!  Thanks to AJack for for providing the clearer image using his artistic skills.

UPDATE: The software 3D Realms uses for their bug tracking needs is JIRA. (added by yossa)

Happy Birthday Duke3D!

Category: Duke3D
by Kristian Joensen, on Thu Jan 29 2009, 01:23PM

13 years ago today, January 29th, 1996 a game development studio in Texas called 3D Realms unleashed the shareware version of a game upon the world. That game was Duke Nukem 3D. A game that was to have a huge influence on the gaming scene as it according to many revolutionized gaming. It went on to have have a great success and spawned many console ports and spin-offs. Some of the things that made the game so successful was the humor, the interactivity, the realistic modern day level design and the strong presence of the bad ass titular character Duke Nukem.

The year after the release of Duke Nukem 3D 3D Realms started early research on a sequel to it, that game is still in active development today.....

We here at Duke4.net have as the reason for our being the Duke Nukem series and are all great fans of Duke Nukem 3D.

Happy Birthday from us at Duke4.net

High Resolution Pack v4 Preview

Category: Duke3D
by Yatta, on Tue Jan 20 2009, 11:40PM

This is a preview of the next version of the Dukie Nukem 3D High Resolution pack, which will be available in February 2009.

This is Beta footage running on EDuke 32 version "1.5.0devel 2008 1230" with a third party bloom lighting mod.  The music, which is part of the large collection of high definition music that is accompanied with this version of the HRP, has been slightly sped up in order to stay in sync to the end of the video.

The footage was recorded with Fraps at 30 FPS in 1280x720 (720p HD) resolution on an AMD 4200+ X2 machine with 2 GB ram and a 256 MB GeForce 7800 GT graphics card.  All graphical settings are set to maximum, with detail textures enabled.

The highlight of the new features included in this version of the HRP are--you guessed it--the strippers.

Duke3D HRP v4 SVN #261 (2009-01-19)
Maphacks Reloaded v4.0 (pre-release for this build)
EDuke32 Music Pack v1.04
EDuke32 snapshot v1.5.0 (v2008-12-30)

George is Back... with a Vengeance!

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Mon Jan 12 2009, 09:41PM

A very brief, light Twat discharge from George Broussard renders the fans to become cautiously optimistic:

Game developers often say "Cutting is shipping". We begin this year with a vengeance and a chainsaw.

Cross your fingers and PRAY, damn you

Update:

GB:

Worked on menu design and layout with Pete and Layne for a couple of hours.

Interesting... not to make any false insinuations, but isn't menu design something you'd work on when you're pretty far into development?  This might be a good sign.
