"Taking pills, drinking and smoking in a game would be in bad taste. Too bad Duke doesn't care, and enjoys his vices."

The Duke Nukem Experience - Part 3

Category: DNF
by Yatta, on Tue Apr 12 2011, 01:07AM

As promised, here is the third and final part of the Duke Nukem Experience.  We promised that in the concluding portion of the series, we'd have our community questions answered.  2K Games' Elizabeth Tobey was kind enough to forward Gearbox's responses to your questions today, so without further ado, here they are!

Without fans like you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do, so thanks for your dedication!

Thank you Gearbox and 2K!

Duke4.net Community Questions

1) Joel Castagner – Duke themed console?

There are no plans to release a Duke-themed console at this time. If you feel the urge to Duke-ify your console, companies such as GelaSkins produce customizable vinyl decals.

2) Randir14 – Demo date and platforms, and SP/MP?  Another trailer before release?  Future Duke games involving 3DR/Triptych?  PC version achievements?  Unlockable content (ex. concept art) and cheat codes?  Steam/GFWL?

The demo will be available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Timing and other details are something we’re hoping to reveal in the near future, so stay tuned!

Yes, there will be more trailers in the lead up to launch, as well as some glimpses behind-the-scenes. Hopefully you’ll have experiences some of those yourself by the time you read this.

At the moment, we’re entirely focused on getting Duke Nukem Forever out the door. After Forever’s done, we’ll think about the future.

The PC version of Duke Nukem Forever will be using Steamworks.

As for unlockable extras, do you really want me to ruin the surprise

3) Zombie – Multiplayer, modes/max players?  More classic map references like Stadium?  Dedicated servers, at least for PC?  Map editor/mod/SDK tools?

There are lots of subtle (and not-so-subtle) nods to the legacy of Duke Nukem tucked away within Duke Nukem Forever. Mod tools aren’t currently included with the game.

Multiplayer sees up to eight people go head-to-head across four modes -- Dukematch, Team Dukematch, Hail to the King and Capture the Babe.  More details regarding these multiplayer modes will be coming out in the very near future.

4) L2theKing – Will you be licensing Duke to third party studios like 3DR used to do?  What happened to Duke Trilogy?

At this time nothing has been decided and we currently have our heads down for Duke Nukem Forever and ensuring we can get that out for everyone.  However, it’s important to note that Gearbox isn’t the only studio working on Duke Nukem Forever. Triptych Games and Pirhana Games, both of which are independent external studios, have been key in the quest to get Duke Nukem Forever into your hands, as has our publishing partner 2K Games.

5) Hank – Can gamers who can prove they waited 14 years (ex. via pre-order receipt) have the game for free?  Or at least receive some recognition?

We certainly want to do something to recognize those that have been patiently awaiting the Duke’s return. There are a lot of parties involved to make some of these things happen and we are still looking at a lot of different options to see if we can possibly reward those who have been waiting for so long.

6) Sharpie –Will there be documentary about the game?

We recently kicked off a behind-the-scenes video series titled “History of a Legend” that will encompass everything from the beginning of Duke Nukem to the release of Duke Nukem Forever.

7) DanM – DX11 / PhysX support?

DirectX 11 and PhysX support will not be included with Duke Nukem Forever at launch.

8) Lotanloov – Who is doing music, will you use licensed music?

Duke Nukem Forever uses a mix of licensed and internally-created music.

9) Petrus - Any Quake and Unreal Engine assets from ’98 and ’01 respectively?  Did you receive old builds in the transition from 3DR?  Will you ever release them like LameDuke?

Yes, we have access to previous builds of Duke Nukem Forever, but it’s important to note that these are incomplete versions of the game that may not even run on current systems. As such, it’s unlikely they will ever be released publicly. That said, these builds are an important part of the game’s history, and we are looking into ways to share that history with everyone.

10) Raziel – DRM protection?

Duke Nukem Forever PC is using Steamworks and only Steamworks.

11) BugsBunny – Censorship ratings for Australia and Germany?

Duke Nukem Forever will be uncensored and uncut in both Australia and Germany, as well as in North America and the United Kingdom.

12) Stewox – Will multiplayer, ex. classic dukematch, also have 2 weapon limit?  Developer mod / console enabled?  Will the game be multithreaded for quad-core support?

Multiplayer uses the same weapon system and controls as single-player.

13) James Collinge - I understand that the game was already quite a way along it's development cycle before Gearbox took the reigns of DNF and brought it home to us. While DNF is undoubtedly a sequel to a 3D Realms game, what has Gearbox added or changed from the 3D Realms developed DNF code that they received in order to add their own unique flavour?

We’re working as hard as we can to deliver the game that 3D Realms originally envisioned, the game that many – ourselves included! – have been waiting for.  While the workload has shifted beyond 3D Realms, Duke Nukem Forever is still very much a 3D Realms game, especially since Triptych Games is mostly comprised of former 3D Realms employees.  Gearbox has helped out with optimizations and polish on some of the art assets, sound, etc.  Piranha has also come in to help a lot with console support and multiplayer.

14) Yatta  - What do you think of Duke4.net? Anything you want to say to the guys at Duke4.net?

Without fans like you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do, so thanks for your dedication!
