Community Build Project 8: Metropolitan Starlight RELEASED!

Category: Duke3D
by Yatta, on Sun Jul 29 2012, 10:08PM

Micky C sends word:

There have been several Duke maps released over the past month or so, so don't forget to check out the forums for those tasty treats. But today marks the release of no ordinary map, but a Community Build Project, where 10 or so mappers from around the planet join forces and combine their skills and effort to spit out a single, large, high quality and "f**king epic" singleplayer map.

The mappers involved with this particular CBP are: Mike Norvak, Michael "Micky C" Crisp, Paul "High Treason" Monteray, Mister Sinister, Maarten van Oostrum, Merlijn van Oostrum, Captain Awesome, Forge, quakis, and William Gee.

In reality there have been more than 8 CBP's, however lets not get into the trivialities of naming conventions and instead provide you with the description:

After 6 months of work, here is Community Build Project 8: Metropolitan Starlight, a huge space-city themed map (file size is 1.1 mb!) that will take you anywhere between 30-50 minutes to complete. There was a long beta testing period where a lot of cross-polishing was done where content was added/polished/slightly changed to aim for a more consistent look throughout, while still maintaining the variety that comes with having multiple mappers. So we hope it is worth the wait. The map makes some use of TROR, and has been designed for polymer with lights disabled, but is also 97% classic renderer compatible for those with polymer issues. HRP is NOT supported, use at your own risk. There is an original music track by Norvak.

The "story" is as follows:

Duke comes out of the restroom to find his beloved domed city in orbit around the Earth has been overrun by aliens. You must explore the city and find a way to unlock the central spire which contains a nuke button that causes the city to self-destruct, as it's the only way to guarantee wiping out all the alien scum before they make it to Earth.

There are a lot of cool areas in this map, but rather than spoiling them with tonnes of photos, just look at this one, and experience the rest yourself!

BLiGHT eDuke32 Mod

Category: Duke3D
by Yatta, on Sun Jul 29 2012, 09:50PM

blight.png

EmericaSkater writes:

BLiGHT is a project I started working on roughly a year ago after inspiration in a number of Zdoom mods culminated in me wanting to create a similar experience with eDuke. I rocked along with that goal for about the first six months, but as I worked on it and brainstormed more, I felt like leaving it just at "Duke mod that borrows from Zdoom mods" would've been selling the concept short, so I changed tracks and restructured certain aspects of the mod, gearing it towards being standalone. That goal's finally been accomplished, it's gone through a bit of third-party testing with the reception being largely positive, so I figure it's ready for a formal announcement/development thread. What I posted in the WIP thread a few days ago was actually using an older version of the mod's weapons, which I'm (kinda) trying to salvage in something else. BLiGHT, however, remains the focus.

Anywho, here's a little gameplay video with me prattling on about it like a moron, feel free to mute it if you can't take my dumb voice - -

Interceptor Entertainment Today

Category: 3D Realms
by Yatta, on Fri Jul 13 2012, 03:26AM

Too lazy to read this long news post? Fear not, TLDR soldiers!  If your time is limited, this is the gist of what you need to know: Fresch and his team, Interceptor Entertainment (IE), who worked on the canceled Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded project, are announcing their new game in two weeks; we do not know what the project entails, except for the fact that it involves their affiliation with "3D Realms veterans," and that others have speculated that the project is a remake or sequel to The Rise of the Triad (ROTT).

If you're awesome like Duke4.net, you'll want to read the full details:

Back in 2010, we reported that an Unreal Engine 3 remake of Duke Nukem 3D, entitled "Duke Nukem Next-Gen," was being worked on by community member Frederik "Fresch" Schreiber. After receiving approval from 3D Realms and Gearbox, the project was underway, and we announced that a website for the project had been established under the rebranded name of "Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded."

With an impressive status update as well as Duke4.net's private opportunity to preview a very early build of the project, excitement for the game had built up high. Unfortunately, we learned last year that the project was put on hold because Fresch's license to create the game prohibited him from actually releasing it. Our forums naturally erupted with speculation, disappointment, and (unfortunately) sometimes hostility.

The community, including Duke4.net's own staff, were left disappointed because we had high hopes of seeing the project come into fruition. Fresch's project was especially important to us because Duke3D Reloaded's anticipated release coincided with a crucial post-Duke Nukem Forever period marked by a decline in our community's interest in things outside the scope of Duke Nukem 3D (1996) modding.

Fortunately, since the alleged abandonment of Duke3D Reloaded, Fresch, who founded Interceptor Entertainment, maintained his interest in working with the people who inspired him to take on his original project. Today, his team's website has matured into a presence more reminiscent of what one would expect from a professional development studio, claiming involvement in two new projects codenamed Pathfinder and Rogue.

More recently, our forum members speculated that Interceptor Entertainment is working with 3D Realms to produce a sequel to the classic Apogee game Rise of the Triad (ROTT). Last month, Fresch neither denied or confirmed this speculation, maintaining that it was nothing but speculation.

During this time, we remained silent with respect to news coverage on the matter because, as a historically credible fan website, we had no interest in perpetuating rumors which lacked concrete evidence. Our news post today, however, is being written in response to concrete evidence, namely a post by Fresch, hinting to Interceptor Entertainment's possible affiliation with 3D Realms in a new development endeavor:

Interceptor is no longer a Mod Team, but a fully established studio.

Most of the Interceptor Developers have an Indie/Modding background, and later got jobs around the industry. Interceptor is made of an All-Star Team, with developers who previously worked with studios such as Sony Online Entertainment, Naughty Dog, and Epic Games.

What we are working on is yet to be revealed. Keep an eye out for QuakeCon in early August, where we will World Premiere a game than I'm sure you've been all eagerly awaiting.

If you are attending QuakeCon, head over to our booth, where the game will be playable, and feel free to have a chat with Joe, myself, and other 3D Realms/Apogee veterans.

rott.jpgThe degree to which Interceptor Entertainment (IE) is affiliated with 3D Realms (or 3D Realms "veterans") is unknown, except for the fact that 3D Realms' former community manager, Joe Siegler, has a profile on IE's team page which hints to his involvement with a "classified project." Perhaps it was this same team page, as well as Siegler's background as a mapper for ROTT, that led to the aforementioned speculation that IE's secret project is a remake or sequel to the Apogee classic.

QuakeCon will commence on August 2nd and continue through to the fifth; until then, we eagerly await more information on the matter.

3D Realms Reviving Earth No More

Category: 3D Realms
by Green, on Wed Jun 27 2012, 06:23AM

thumb_large_thumb_enm.jpg
3D Realms is reviving Earth No More through Gambitious, a hybrid crowd-funding platform dedicated specifically to the game industry.  The website offers funding through both donations and equity-based funding, and it's set for full launch on August 15th. It's also worth noting that Scott Miller is one of the five members of the Gambitious advisory board.

Earth No More (3D Realms)

Mankind’s relentless destruction of Earth awakens a biological response from deep within the planet’s crust that threatens an environmental apocalypse.

Scott Miller - Founder Apogee/3D Realms (Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Prey Franchises)

Scott Miller is a gaming pioneer who's still going strong. He practically invented episodic gaming, online distribution, and was a leader in independent studios developing their own mega-brands back in the early 90's and to this day. His company, 3D Realms, released the world's first 3D shooter (Wolfenstein 3D, 1992), and is known for other mega-hits such as Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Shadow Warrior, and Prey (all still ongoing franchises). Scott is a creative leader, and now focuses on creating transmedia properties that involve a rich storyverse that can be exploited in not only games, but films, comics, merchandising, and other media. As such, he's currently involved in numerous fresh properties in both games and films, including bringing Duke Nukem himself to the big screen.

"Having worked with Mike and Harry going back to GodGames in the later 90's, with their passion and track-record for indie development, I can't name two people better capable of leading a new charge into equity-based crowd funding for independent game development. Why just donate to projects, when you can become an owner? The game industry just got a lot more interesting."

Nuking the 3D Realms Lobby Floor

Category: 3D Realms
by Yatta, on Wed May 16 2012, 06:21AM

Former 3D Realms community manager Joe Siegler has just posted a very touching blog article about a special Nuke logo that existed on the 3D Realms office floor until the company went belly-up.  Long story short, the $10,000 floor piece glorified the 3DR lobby until its demise earlier this year, when Goodwill overtook the building and tore down the tiles.

As a testament to the original work, longtime fan MrBlackCat has recreated the Nuke logo on the floor of his game room--and boy does it look awesome.  Check out the photos below for a comparison--but do yourself a giant favor and read Joe's post while you're at it.  As a bigtime Duke fan, I found it to be a great read.
