PC Zone Article on Duke
Game magazine PC Zone has interviewed Scott Miller regarding 3D Realms / Apogee. The article contains tidbits from Scott himself regarding the Duke franchise as well as the company's other games, namely Prey. Scott concedes that Duke Nukem Forever's development has been a mess, and that he cannot say anything about its current state due to the ongoing lawsuit with the game's vengeful publisher, Take Two.
Interestingly enough, there's also an image in the second scan that was "borrowed" from our very own Duke4.net. I am of course referring to this screenshot I rendered three years ago for one of our Duke3D multiplayer tutorials.
Duke Nukem 3D Released on iPhone
As per an earlier news item, Duke3D has finally been made available as a downloadable application for Apple's iPhone. If you've got iTunes installed, you can check out the game here. Here's an excerpt from the iTunes store description for the game, regarding the controls:
Shacknews reports that two other Duke Nukem games are planned for this platform, with the current one undergoing some updates to optimize the controls Oh yeah, and we found a gameplay video of it on Youtube:
ZeniMax and Prey?
Since 3D Realms let their internal development team go, there have been a number of news stories about the company and its subsequent actions. We all know about the ongoing lawsuit between 3D Realms and Take Two concerning Duke Nukem Forever and Duke Begins. Scott Miller has also mentioned that there are a number of iPhone games coming out, including the just released port of Duke Nukem 3D.
However that is not all that has been going on with 3D Realms in the last few months, it has come to our attention that the Prey trademark that was held by 3D Realms has now shifted hands twice. On June 22nd, 3D Realms assigned its interest in the trademark to Radar Group. However perhaps more interestingly less than a month later, on July 21st, Radar Group assigned its interests in the trademark to ZeniMax Media.
The company that has been in the news alot lately as the publisher of Splash Damage’s Brink and for acquiring famous development studio id Software. The reasons for these dealings in the Prey trademark and what effect if any they will have on Prey 2 or the Eastern European publishing deal already in place for it is unknown. When we know more we will let you know.
Unofficial DNF Media Collection
While there hasn't been a lot to report regarding Duke Nukem Forever as of late, a large amount of media from the game was released over the past few months from unofficial sources. Many of you are aware of these leaks and have seen much of the content, but we thought it would be nice to create a page where all the media would be accessible from one place.
Our unofficial Duke Nukem Forever media page is a collection of links to all the unofficially released media from the game. We will be regularly updating this page so you won't ever have to miss out on even the smallest screenshot release. If you missed out on the Jace Hall videos, the portfolio leaks, or the Facebook frenzies, this is for you.
Thanks to zchri9 and mrpijey, we have also been able to prepare a compilation file you can download, which contains all the aforementioned media:
Whether or not we'll get to see DNF anytime soon, Duke4.net isn't going anywhere. We're just getting started--and you ain't seen nothin' yet!
Duke Plus Community Build Project
In the author's own words, DukePlus is a game-enhancer and customizer for the EDuke32 port of Duke Nukem 3D. Written by Dan Gaskill (a.k.a. “DeeperThought”), the DukePlus mod provides optional enhancements to the original game as well as giving level-designers a vast selection of new options and effects to utilize in their maps. As you may know, we've covered this in the past.
The Community Build Project takes full advantage Duke Plus to bring you a wide array of cool in-game special effects. The level has been developed by community mappers including Gambini, Mikko_Sandt, Crux Borealis, Rigelblast, Merlijn, Maarten van Oostrum, and DeeperThought.
Make sure you have the latest version of Duke Plus before proceeding to download the Duke Plus Community Build Project. You can also discuss the project here.
WGRealms 2 Mod Trailer
One of the modifications of high interest in the Duke Nukem 3D community is WGRealms, for which the author, William Gee, is releasing a sequel. The total conversion should please fans of classic shooters who are fond of the original art style of Build engine games. You may view footage from WGRealms 2 below:
The mod runs on EDuke32, which means you'll need the original Duke Nukem 3D group file to run it. You can grab a cheap copy of Duke3D here if you don't already own it.
More Lawsuit Drama
Court documents filed by Take-Two indicate that Duke Begins is/was being developed by Gearbox. Apparently they've halted development on Duke Begins, but it hasn't been cancelled. 3D Realms wanted Duke Begins to be out by mid-2010 so they would be able to repay an advance of $2.5 million they received from Take-Two for the development of DNF. The advance is due to be paid back by 2012.
3D Realms claims that it continues to work on the development of DNF without a contractual deadline for delivering the game to Take-Two; however, Take-Two writes that the "law implies a reasonable deadline for the completion of contractual performance where no deadline is explicitly set forth in the contract."
Visit Shacknews for uninteresting details on the drama in addition to court document scans.
I think it's interesting to note that 3D Realms (namely co-founder/CEO Scott Miller) has continued to release DNF screenshots on Duke's Facebook (see news below) amongst the turmoil noted above. As far as we know, there is no team working on the development of the game, and George Broussard is away in Vegas playing poker and posting about his gambling on Twitter.
Also, there appears to be a contradiction with new DNF screenshot releases and George's claim that their legal disputes prevent them from being able to even talk about the game. Earler court documents even indicated that part of the lawsuit against 3D Realms dealt with Take-Two's unease with 3D Realms' tendency to leak unofficial game media.
Is the King Back in Action?
We don't know, and we were skeptical when we read Scott say "If you haven’t heard, [Duke] took a little break, but is back in the game now." But three hours ago, two new Duke Nukem Forever screenshots were put up on Duke's Facebook:
Duke3D for the iPhone
There is an IGN news article stating that Machineworks Northwest will soon release the classic game to the app store. The entire game has been ported over and uses a control scheme similar to Prey Invasion. It uses the original sprites and textures; however, they've been smoothed over for a much cleaner look.
Thanks to Micky C and phreakindee for the heads up!
